A new look for Powerball draw show set to debut in Sept. 30 drawing

A new look for Powerball draw show set to debut in Sept. 30 drawing
INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 25, 2020) — The Powerball Product Group, a collective group of 38 lotteries including the Hoosier Lottery, announced a series of exciting, new changes coming to the Powerball® draw show. New drawing machines, ball sets and other production enhancements will debut in the Wednesday, Sept. 30 drawing. While the look of the draw show will change, the Powerball game itself will remain the same.

“We are excited about the future of Powerball,” said Sarah M. Taylor, Hoosier Lottery Executive Director and President of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). “For 28 years now, America’s jackpot has been life-changing.  It was time to see some changes to the show, as well.”

Formerly Lotto America, Powerball hosted its first drawing on Apr. 22, 1992. Later that year, Indiana had the very first Powerball jackpot winner. Since then, the Hoosier Lottery has had 39 jackpot wins, making it the nation's leader.

The new drawing machines are the Halogen II model from Smartplay International, Inc. The Halogen II is an upgraded version of the gravity-driven machines that are currently used in Powerball drawings.

“Attention to security screenings and certifications to ensure the integrity of the game was a top priority,” said Taylor. “The plan to execute changes to the Powerball draw show started last year. We were in the middle of the project when the COVID-19 health crisis hit. Despite challenges, committee members from participating lotteries were able to continue working to produce this new, thrilling draw show and we are excited for our loyal Powerball players to see the final product.”

Powerball tickets are $2 per play. Tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are broadcast live every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee and broadcast in Indiana on WTVW, WANE, WXIN, WNDU, WTWO. Drawings can also be viewed online at Powerball.com.

More than half of all proceeds from the sale of a Powerball ticket remain in the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold.
