Hoosier Lottery emphasizes Positive Play in support of Problem Gambling Awareness Month

INDIANAPOLIS (February 28, 2022) - Every March, the Hoosier Lottery proudly participates in the National Council on Problem Gambling's (NCPG) campaign to help increase awareness of responsible gaming. This is an extension of year-round positive play messaging efforts that led the Hoosier Lottery to receive the highest level of certification by the World Lottery Association for the promotion of responsible gaming and programming.

The Hoosier Lottery promotes positive play messaging with numerous tools and resources to help players know their game, set limits, and keep lottery play fun. Players can access these free resources on HoosierLottery.com/PositivePlay. Content includes a Positive Play Quiz, spend calculator, odds trivia, Financial Literacy Course, and Positive Play videos which assess players' behaviors and beliefs about playing the lottery. Problem Gambling Awareness Month messaging will also be visible on outdoor billboards, radio alerts, and digital and social media communications. As always, the Problem Gambling Helpline, 1-800-955-6886 is readily available on the Hoosier Lottery's digital and printed resources.

Hoosier Lottery Executive Director Sarah M. Taylor stated: "We are committed to responsible gaming and strive to promote a positive playing experience. We want our players to enjoy our games. If playing the lottery is no longer about having fun, we have resources readily available through our player focused educational program. Positive play means enjoying the fun and entertainment of our games, understanding the odds, and setting time and money limits."

The Hoosier Lottery partners with the Indiana gaming industry to help promote responsible gaming. The committee includes Indiana gaming operators, casinos, and sports books with a focus on strengthening internal responsible gaming programs and coordinating responsible gaming campaigns.

Indiana Council on Problem Gambling Executive Director Christina Gray said: "For years, the main focus in Indiana has been the awareness of problem gambling and the warning signs that someone may have a problem. While it has not been as emphasized, responsible gambling is just as important and has been around for many years. Responsible gambling offers the players the knowledge of the game and ways to play responsibly."

The NCPG reports an estimated two million adults in the US (1 percent) meet the criteria for severe gambling problems, and another four-to-six million (2-3 percent) have mild to moderate gambling problems. Research also indicates that most adults who choose to gamble are able to do so responsibly. The NCPG considers problem gambling to be all gambling behavior patterns that compromise, disrupt or damage personal, family or vocational pursuits. Individuals in a state of problem gambling may have aggravating circumstances such as alcohol or substance abuse, financial issues or depression.
