Retiree from Williamsport, Ind., claims $50,000 prize playing Powerball^®
Vicki D. and her son bought their Powerball tickets at an Amoco gas station in Williamsport, Ind., in mid-January in response to the growing jackpot that was approaching $700 million. Both decided they were going to buy Quick Picks for their Powerball draw slips, so they bubbled in their selections and took their place in line—Vicki in front, her son right behind. Once they purchased their tickets, they drove home.

Late on the evening of Wednesday, January 13 after the evening Powerball drawing, Vicki grabbed her tablet to check her numbers. The numbers on her screen read 04-19-23-25-49 and POWERBALL: 14. She compared it to her ticket and her eyes began to widen—her ticket matched all but one number. “As soon as I looked at my ticket and realized that I had 4 of the 5 numbers and the Powerball, I started to get a little nervous. Not a bad nervous—more anxious.”  

The first person Vicki told about her win was her son that bought the tickets with her. “I called my son at 4:30 the next morning to tell him. He was shocked and happy for me. I also wanted to brag a little bit because if we switched places in line, he would be the one that won and not me.”

Vicki has not told many people outside of her immediate family about her win and she is excited to use the money for some home renovations among other things that are coming up in the future. 

When asked to reflect further about the moment she won, Vicki said, “You always hope you’re the one that is going to win, so I guess it’s the excitement of thinking you might be the person—and I was!”
