Lifelong Service Into Retirement And Beyond

05/14/20255 minutes

Tim Davie, a local hero for his extraordinary service and leadership, spent over 26 years as a firefighter, rising through the ranks to become Fire Chief of Fort Wayne. His journey is a testament to the impact made by individuals who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving their communities.

Tim’s foray into firefighting is a story of humble beginnings, and a little chance. It was on a short visit to a local fire station while working another job that he was first introduced to the profession, seeing first-hand what a profound impact firefighters have. "I didn't realize how important it was to go in and help people when they're having the worst day of their lives."

With some encouragement from his brother, a forensic chemist specializing in arson, he applied for a job with his local fire department, was accepted and quickly discovered the impact of helping people during their most vulnerable moments, whether responding to house fires, medical emergencies or accidents. He came to see that every call was an opportunity to make a difference and how much more fulfilling it is to give than to receive. This mindset continued to fuel his passion for over two decades, propelling him up the career ladder, eventually to chief.

As Fire Chief, Tim oversaw the department, ensuring the safety and well-being of the city's structures and residents. He faced numerous challenges, including the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, a time when the entire nation was on high alert. Tim's leadership during this pivotal time was crucial in preparing Fort Wayne for any potential future threats.

But Tim's story is not just about fighting fires and leading a department. It's also about the importance of community and support systems that make it all possible. For over 35 years, the Hoosier Lottery has been a vital part of this support system, contributing over $7 billion to good causes across the state, including the $30 million we contribute to local police and firefighters' pensions every year, ensuring those who have spent their lives protecting their communities can enjoy a financially secure retirement. And it’s all thanks to players like you.

Tim's own experience with the pension system highlights its significance. "It's been a godsend having the pension," he says, acknowledging the physical and mental toll of the job. "Being able to have something to rely on was really important."

Tim's dedication to serving others didn't end with his retirement from the fire department. He took two weeks off and then embarked on his next chapter, taking a position overseeing emergency planning, safety and security for a hospital network. Now enjoying a true retirement, he remains active, serving on the Fort Wayne Board of Public Safety, fishing and cherishing time with his family, including his grandchildren and great-grandson.

Tim's story is a powerful reminder of the impact that everyday heroes have on our lives and a testament to the importance of supporting those who dedicate their lives to serving others. So every time you play the Hoosier Lottery, remember you're not just playing for a chance to win; you're also giving Hoosier Heroes like Tim a chance to fulfill ambitions beyond their careers, and a chance to enjoy their hard-earned retirement by taking care of themselves for once, too.
