When the Powerball® jackpot was nearing $1 billion, many people who aren’t regular players purchased a ticket or two to join in the excitement of a potentially record-setting jackpot. One such person is a man from North Liberty who typically only plays Hoosier Lottery Scratch-offs. However, with the growing buzz surrounding the steadily rising jackpot, he decided to purchase a few Powerball tickets.

The night after the drawing, he checked the winning numbers online and saw one of his tickets had matched four of the five white balls and the Powerball. “I looked up the prize amounts and knew I won either $50,000 or $100,000,” he said. After a little more investigation, he realized he won $100,000 due to adding Power Play® to his ticket and the 2X multiplier!

Unable to contain his excitement, he then woke up everyone in the house, one by one. His family members were all shocked and elated when they heard his news. Well, except his son—he was still half asleep when his dad told him about his win and simply patted his dad on the arm and said, “That’s good.” He then promptly fell back asleep. Later, when he was fully awake, his son joined the family in celebrating.

The winner is retired after a 49-year career at AM General and plans to use his winnings to pay a few bills and purchase a new freezer. The rest of his prize money will be put into savings.
