Winner Stories
Greens Fork is a tiny town of 335 residents that sits just outside Richmond. One of those 335 residents decided to purchase a few Powerball® tickets when the jackpot began to rise to historic levels.
The day after the drawing, the Greens Fork resident was on a break from work and returned to the gas station where he had purchased his tickets. After grabbing something to drink, he began scanning his tickets on the Hoosier Lottery self-service machine. As he was doing so, he overheard the store’s clerk tell another customer, “We just had a big Powerball winner.”
The man scanned his next ticket and saw a message stating he would need to contact the Hoosier Lottery to claim his prize. He didn’t know for sure how much he won, but he started to think maybe he was the “big winner”.
He handed the clerk his Powerball ticket and asked her to scan it. “We just had someone hit $50,000,” she said.
“Um…I think it’s me,” the man replied.
The clerk scanned the ticket, her eyes widening, and said, “Wow! It might be!”
The man returned to work just long enough to let his boss know he was leaving for the day and then went straight home to figure out whether he really was the big winner. Once he looked up the prize amounts and saw he was in fact the $50,000 winner, he was elated.
He told his wife and two sons the good news, and they all shared in his excitement as they made plans to travel to the Hoosier Lottery’s Prize Payment Office in Indianapolis to claim his prize.
The winner says he plans to use the prize money to pay a couple of bills and to do something with his family to celebrate.
