Carole never imagined that her retirement would be as busy and meaningful as her teaching days. But then the COVID-19 pandemic happened.

Carole retired from teaching three years ago, spending 20 years in the Indianapolis Public School System and 7 years working with the IUPUI School of Education. She currently resides in Indianapolis, and is going above and beyond in order to help her community. She volunteers at Second Helpings, an organization that recovers food from wholesalers, restaurants and grocery stores in order to be used for hot meals to feed Hoosiers in need. Seemingly overnight, that need nearly doubled.

Carole has done nearly every volunteer job available with Second Helpings in order to help the Indianapolis community. When asked about what it means to be a Hoosier during this time, she said:

“When I think of being a Hoosier, I think it’s about being human, and at this point doing what we can to help people that are being underserved right now. I think part of the general nature of being a teacher is to support people that need help.”
