Hours after learning he won $900,000 on a Hoosier Lottery Scratch-off, Anthony Vottero knew the first thing he wanted to do: give back.
Anthony, of Portage, served seven years in the U.S. Coast Guard and had three tours of duty, including time in Iraq. Now a disabled veteran, Anthony wants to use some of his prize money to help the program that helped him with his post-traumatic stress disorder: the Road Home Program at Rush in Chicago. The program assists veterans regardless of their ability to pay.
Anthony and his wife, Wendy, said they may also donate to a local church in addition to using the money for their own family expenses.
“I think at this point we’re just trying to process that it’s real,” Wendy said.
Anthony bought the winning ticket at Meijer C-Stop, 6060 U.S. Highway 6, Portage. Anthony said he buys Scratch-offs “here and there” and only buys them at the Meijer C-Stop.
He bought the winning ticket at 10:18 a.m. “and 16 seconds,” Anthony added off the top of his head. He took the Hit 9 Scratch-off to his truck and started scratching right away.
“I scratched it and the zeroes started coming,” he said, adding he told himself, “This can’t be real.”
He quickly walked back into the Meijer C-Stop and asked them to check it. The employee scanned it and told him, “Please don’t have a heart attack” before confirming they believed he won $900,000.
The couple wasted no time, immediately driving from Portage to Indianapolis to claim the prize.
Two prizes of $900,000 remain for $20 Hit 9 as of Aug. 9. The game is part of the Hoosier Lottery’s new Hit Collection of Games. The collection also includes $1 Hit 6, $2 Hit 7, and $5 Hit 8.
