A lifelong love of helping others: Kevin L., Retired Firefighter

08/23/20225 minutes

Hoosier Lottery Beneficiary, Local Police & Firefighters’ Pensions

Indiana resident Kevin L. was lucky enough to find a career that fulfilled both of his passions: Helping people and having a little excitement.

Kevin was a firefighter at the Jeffersonville Fire Department in Jeffersonville, Indiana for 39 and a half years. He retired in 2019 after a long, fulfilling career.

His fondest memories revolve around the camaraderie he felt with his fellow firefighters. He loved cooking with them and enjoying family-style meals. He also has fond memories of attending big parties on the Ohio River where he’d waterski with the whole crew.

“We were very close-knit, like family,” Kevin said. “We’d also volunteer at events like Steamboat Days, raising money for local charities.”

While Kevin truly loved his job, the decision to retire wasn’t too difficult to make. “Firefighting is a young man’s game,” he said. “It just seemed right. I need to enjoy life while I’m healthy.”

“Plus, my pension was one of the main reasons I was able to retire,” he added. “Being able to count on that money every month is a big deal.”

Even in retirement, Kevin enjoys helping people and making a difference in the lives of his friends and family.

His open schedule allows him to be there for his mother-in-law and siblings, running errands with them and taking them to appointments. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. He is active in his church and makes a point to stay in shape, walking and biking as much as he can. He also stays in touch with some of his firefighter friends and meets them out for dinner.

When asked what he’d say to someone thinking about becoming a firefighter, Kevin responded with a smile. “It’s a great career choice. No two days are ever the same. And you get to help people out on the toughest day of their lives.”

The Hoosier Lottery would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Kevin and all the other firefighters who make a huge difference in the lives of so many, each and every day.
