Juan Marines Encarnacion works construction in Gary. Most days he’s at the jobsite very early, so he typically stops at a gas station on his way to work to grab an energy drink. On this trip, he also bought a $5 Black Diamond Dazzler ticket and then waited until his lunch break to scratch it.
When Juan saw that he won the top prize of $100,000, he couldn’t believe it. “I was so nervous,” Juan said. “I didn’t tell anyone because I wasn’t sure it was real.”
He eventually told a couple of close friends, and they agreed to ride with him when he drove to the Hoosier Lottery Prize Payment office in Indianapolis to claim his prize. During the drive, Juan was still nervous, asking his friends, “What if it’s not real? What if it’s a mistake?”
When the Prize Payment office staff confirmed that he had indeed won the top prize, Juan was ecstatic.
Juan plans to put his winnings in savings.
