Hugh Bir stays busy running a tavern in New Albany and playing music. He began playing guitar at just 5 years old and still loves playing. He and his band mostly play classic country music and 1950s and ‘60s rock.
One day Hugh was on his way to the tavern to cover a shift for his daytime bartender when he stopped to buy a couple Hoosier Lottery Scratch-offs. While still in the store, he scratched the $20 Triple Diamond Payout and was stunned to see he won the game’s top prize of $500,000.
“I was so shocked,” said Hugh. “I still am!”
Hugh then scanned the ticket using the Hoosier Lottery app and saw the message stating he would need to go to the Hoosier Lottery’s office. He told the store’s clerk that he had just won half a million dollars, and the clerk did a happy dance with him. When asked whether he has told anyone else about his win, Hugh laughed, “Oh, all of Floyd County knows by now!”
Hugh plans to use some of his winnings to repair one of his vehicles and purchase some music equipment. He will put the rest in savings.
