Road Trip Bonus Highlights

The first few weeks of Hoosier Road Trip included stops in the following Indiana cities and towns: Richmond, Madison, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Muncie, Porter, Lafayette, Jasper and South Bend. Between trivia questions, polls and a handful of themed games, we learned quite a bit about our home state! For those who’ve traveled along, we’ve rounded up five bonus facts about some of our stops to keep the fun (and those wheels) rolling!

• In Richmond, we matched chocolates to celebrate Wayne County’s Chocolate Trail. Sweet, right? Bonus: The famous Wright brothers, who were aviation engineers have roots in Richmond — Orville and Wilbur Wright actually lived here for part of their life!


• Our stop in Muncie gave nods to Bob Ross, the famous painter who filmed his show in this Indiana town. Bonus: But of course, Muncie is also known for the comic Garfield! Jim Davis, the creator of the lasagna-loving feline, who lived in Muncie.


• In Lafayette, we learned all about the Star City of the West. But did you know that the town was home to founding members from the famous rock group Guns N’ Roses? Bonus: The band was officially formed in Los Angeles, but front man Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin were both born and raised in Lafayette!


• We stopped in Elkhart and learned all about the RV capital of the world (and the band instrument capital of the world). But this Indiana town is the birthplace of something else — Alka-Seltzer. Bonus: Alka-Seltzer, the well-known antacid, was produced in Elkhart by Miles Laboratories (now Bayer Corp.).


• In Jasper, we got a glimpse into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame to learn about some of the state’s best ballplayers. Jasper is also home to a Strassenfest, a 4-day event that celebrates the town’s connection to Pfaffenweiler, its German sister city. Bonus: Did you know that over the course of the 4-day festival, over 1,300 lbs. of bratwurst are consumed?
