May is a special time in Indiana as we welcome the return of warmer weather, baseball and the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. With the month of May featuring International Firefighters’ Day (May 4), Teacher Appreciation Week (May 5-9) and National Police Week (May 11-17), it is also the perfect time for the Hoosier Lottery to recognize the many beneficiaries it supports—retired teachers, police officers and firefighters.

During Fiscal Year 2024, the Hoosier Lottery returned $364 million back to the state of Indiana in surplus revenue, fulfilling its mission to return maximum net revenue to the State in a socially responsible manner. Money returned to the state goes toward pension and retirement funds for police, firefighters and teachers. Each year, the Hoosier Lottery contributes $30 million to local police and firefighters’ pensions and $30 million to the Teachers’ Retirement Fund. Additional funds go to the Lottery Surplus Fund, which is used to lower excise taxes by up to 50 percent for Hoosier vehicle owners.

“We’re so proud of the more than 7 billion dollars the Hoosier Lottery has generated for the State of Indiana in the last 35 years,” said Hoosier Lottery Executive Director Sarah M. Taylor. “Giving back to good causes is part of the Hoosier Lottery’s commitment to helping build a Stronger, Safer, Smarter Indiana.”
