May is a special time in Indiana as we welcome the return of warmer weather, baseball and the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. With the month of May featuring International Firefighters’ Day (May 4), Teacher Appreciation Week (May 5-9) and National Police Week (May 11-17), it is also the perfect time for the Hoosier Lottery to recognize the many beneficiaries it supports—retired teachers, police officers and firefighters. 

The Hoosier Lottery gave $340.6 million back to the state of Indiana in fiscal year 2025, fulfilling its mission to return maximum net revenue to the State in a socially responsible manner. Money returned to the state goes toward pension and retirement funds for police, firefighters and teachers. Each year, the Hoosier Lottery contributes $30 million to local police and firefighters’ pensions and $30 million to the Teachers’ Retirement Fund. Additional funds go to the Lottery Surplus Fund, which is used to lower excise taxes by up to 50 percent for Hoosier vehicle owners.

Taylor. “Giving back to good causes is all part of the Hoosier Lottery’s commitment to helping build a Stronger, Safer, Smarter Indiana.”
