First of 20 million-dollar-plus winners claims prize
On Thursday, April 30, hours after learning she won $2 million from the April 29 Powerball drawing, retiree Jean Mayes, Crawfordsville, was in the Hoosier Lottery Prize Payment Office in downtown Indianapolis with her two sons claiming her prize.
An enthusiast of cooking, baking and making memories with her family, Jean also enjoys playing Hoosier Lottery games. She plays Powerball every Wednesday and Saturday as part of her weekly routine.
That routine paid off in a big way when Jean won $2 million on Powerball. She purchased her winning ticket at Kroger, one of her favorite places to buy her lottery tickets.
Jean was at home enjoying her morning coffee when she checked her ticket using the Hoosier Lottery app. When the app prompted her to visit the Hoosier Lottery Prize Payment office, she knew she had won something big.
“At first, I thought I won $1 million,” Jean said. “Then I realized it was $2 million. I was shocked.”
While she has not decided exactly what she will do with her winnings, Jean says she is thankful and hopes to take a family vacation with the people she loves most.

Since its first drawing in 1992, Powerball has inspired the country with a chance to become a millionaire, while raising $25 billion for good causes supported by lotteries. Indiana had the very first Powerball jackpot winner in 1992 and leads the nation in Powerball jackpot wins with 40.
“This is a historic and incredibly exciting moment for the Hoosier Lottery and for players across Indiana,” said Sarah M. Taylor, executive director of the Hoosier Lottery, upon first learning of the wins. “Indiana has long had a special connection to Powerball selling the very first jackpot ticket back in 1992. Last night’s drawing continued that tradition in a truly remarkable way. From La Porte to Spencer, Fort Wayne to North Vernon, and several communities in between, Hoosier Lottery players across the state have a lot to celebrate.”
The Powerball jackpot for Saturday, May 2, is an estimated $20 million.
Powerball Overall Odds are 1 in 25.
