Finding Adventure in Indiana

Your wild is waiting... and it’s closer than you think. Here are some wild spaces and wild places you can explore right here in Indiana.

The Hoosier Habitat

While you must play the Wild Pursuit game to see jungles and swamps, you can still experience lots of interesting terrain in the Hoosier state. With plenty of open greenspace, dense forests, rolling dunes of sand, lakes, rivers and even waterfalls, there’s truly something for everyone during all four seasons of the year.

  • The Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary: The Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary is in Fayette County and encompasses more than 700 acres of land. Enjoy trails for hiking or snowshoeing, ponds for fishing and keep your eyes peeled for woodpeckers, hummingbirds, goldfinches, butterflies, plus migratory birds in the winter months.
  • Indiana Dunes National Park: The Indiana Dunes National Park in Porter boasts 15,000 acres, 1,100 flowering plants, 350 bird species, 50 miles of hiking trails, 15 miles of lakeshore and multiple campsites. There’s truly something for every nature lover, including sandy dunes, sunny prairies, twisty rivers, sledding hills and tranquil forests.

Exploring Wildlife in Indiana

Though Hoosiers won’t see leopards, tigers, zebras or alligators in their backyards, that doesn’t mean wild things aren’t in Indiana. From bobcats to owls to salamanders and even armadillos, Indiana is home to a variety of species. See how many of these you can find on your next adventure.

  • Bald Eagles: Bald eagles were removed from Indiana’s endangered list in 2020, a direct result of researchers successfully reintroducing eagle chicks to the population. They are most often spotted along rivers and other bodies of water.
  • Armadillos: Nine-banded armadillos are often found in the southeastern part of the United States, but reports of armadillo sightings were first noted in the early 2000s in southwestern Indiana. These animals are about the size of a house cat and can weigh between 10-15 pounds.
  • Indiana Bats: Indiana is home to 13 different bat species, one of which (the Indiana Bat) is even named after the Hoosier state. Bats are very important when it comes to controlling insect populations – they’re insectivores!
