Kelli Kappus has been a cardiac nurse at Franciscan Health for 40 years. Outside of nursing, Kelli enjoys spending time with family and traveling with her husband.

She plays the Hoosier Lottery occasionally. When she stopped at Speedway for a soda, she found an $8 winning ticket in her purse and used it to purchase two Powerball® and two Mega Millions® tickets. She put the tickets in her purse and forgot about them until the following week.

That next week at the Speedway again to pick up a soda, Kelli spotted the tickets in her purse and scanned them to see if she had won. When she scanned her Powerball ticket, the message on the scanner told her to visit the Hoosier Lottery office. Kelli went to her car and researched the winning numbers and her prize amount, which was a surprising $50,000!

Kelli went on with her day, visiting her mom as planned. When she told her mom what had just happened, her mom was stunned. She had seen a news story about an unclaimed Powerball ticket sold in their town and was shocked that it was Kelli’s ticket!

“I couldn’t believe I’d been walking around with $50,000 in my purse for a week,” said Kelli.

Kelli and her husband are nearing retirement and are already planning grand travel adventures. She plans to put her prize money toward the couple’s extended European vacation once they retire.
