How Paul Ford's Passion For Service Ignited A Lasting Legacy

07/08/20255 minutes

Paul Ford's story isn't just about fighting fires; it's about uniting his community and building a legacy of service that stretches far beyond the firehouse. Since retiring in 2022 after 31 years with the Decatur Township Fire Department, Paul's impact still echoes throughout his community, proving just how much heart he put into his work and how far it was felt.

From his start as a volunteer in 1991 to his rise through the ranks of the department, Paul kindled just as many connections as fires he fought--both amongst his crew and the locals they dutifully served.

"I wanted to come to work. I was there for the community," Paul reflects, highlighting his genuine passion for his work. His fondest memories are not just of the adrenaline-filled emergency responses, but of the camaraderie he built and experiences he shared with his fellow firefighters, whom he now refers to as his "family."

Yet the impact Paul made throughout his career didn't end with his service to his department. He also helped establish a union at Decatur Township, driven by his passion for supporting the vital work of his fellow firefighters.

"I'm proud to say I was a big part of growing that pension base," Paul states, emphasizing the importance of securing a stable future for his colleagues. His dedication aligns with the Hoosier Lottery's commitment to supporting those who serve their communities across Indiana, including the firefighter pensions to which the Hoosier Lottery has contributed for over 35 years.

"It's the greatest career," Paul says when asked to share his advice for aspiring future firefighters. "Probably one of the most rewarding things you can do, not only for your community but for yourself." Paul's story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact a single person can make when their work sparks a passion to leave an even larger and lasting impact. Through Paul's years of service, advocacy for fair treatment, and ongoing commitment to his community, Paul truly embodies the spirit of a true Hoosier Hero.

So every time you play the Hoosier Lottery, remember you're helping contribute to the happy and fulfilling retirements of heroes just like Paul Ford, whose dedication deserves to be recognized and rewarded.
