Hoosier Lottery Beneficiary, Local Police & Firefighters’ Pensions
Retired firefighter Jim R. not only served his community for 29 years as part of the Fort Wayne Fire Department, but he also went above and beyond to serve his fellow firefighters and public safety officers.
Jim’s resume of service is a long one. Jim served as a combat fire fighter, officer and training instructor while presiding as the president of Fort Wayne Firefighters Local 124. During his 11 years at Local 124, Jim oversaw the creation of a commission to oversee the hiring, promotions, and discipline of sworn firefighters. He also worked with local officials to purchase a historic fire station that became the new union headquarters and community center.
When asked about his time a firefighter, Jim has fond memories. “I enjoyed things like fellowship and serving the community,” he said.
Other additions to Jim’s resume include protecting our country in the United States Marine Corp., serving as the State Vice President for the Professional Firefighters Union of Indiana and managing the development and delivery of diversity and equity training for career firefighters through his work with the International Association of Firefighters.
In 2009, Jim retired. He acknowledged and appreciated that “having a defined benefit plan provides financial comfort upon retirement,” he said.
Today, he enjoys traveling, golfing, puttering in his garden and attending community service events.
Jim certainly earned a relaxing retirement, and we are so thankful for Jim’s contributions to our state and country. He’s one of the many Hoosiers who have helped make our state stronger, safer and smarter.
