What Do We Do?

Explain that it is illegal to sell lottery tickets to minors and that the Hoosier Lottery is committed to preventing such purchases.
Train our approximately 4,400 retailers across the state to ask players for identification before purchasing a ticket, as well as how to monitor the self-service vending machines found in many stores.
Equip our retailers with the ability to shut off a self-service vending machine if a minor attempts to make a purchase.
Display our Responsible Gaming Logo, which includes the “18 +” symbol as a reminder that players must be 18 or older to play.
Promote the need to Gift Responsibly by only purchasing tickets as gifts for those 18 or older, at gift-giving opportunities year-round and during the holiday season.

Why Is It Important?

Many teenagers try out different gambling activities, like poker, dice, Scratch-offs and sports betting.

Lottery is often perceived as a harmless or low-risk social activity for participants of all ages, and it is not unusual for parents to offer lottery tickets, especially Scratch-offs, to their children.

According to the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors, research shows that minors are at a greater risk of developing a problem with gambling than adults.
