Responsible Gaming
The Hoosier Lottery recently joined fellow members of the Indiana Council on Problem Gambling (ICPG) Responsible Gaming Committee for a presentation from Lisa Hutcheson, MEd, CPS, Vice President of Prevention and Policy at Mental Health America of Indiana (MHAI).
As part of the Committee's ongoing efforts to share responsible gaming best practices and strengthen partnerships across Indiana, Lisa provided an overview of MHAI's work and discussed the important role prevention, treatment, and education play in reducing gambling-related harms.
Advocating for Mental Health and Prevention
Founded in 1951, Mental Health America of Indiana works to promote mental wellness, increase access to services, and advocate for policies that support individuals and families throughout the state. The organization provides prevention programming, education, counseling resources, crisis support, public policy advocacy, and recovery-focused initiatives.
Lisa has dedicated nearly three decades to prevention efforts in Indiana. She has led the Indiana Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking since its inception in 1997 and directs the Indiana Collegiate Action Network. As Vice President of Prevention and Policy at MHAI, she supports advocacy efforts focused on alcohol, tobacco and vaping, cannabis, gaming, and other public health issues.
Through her work, Lisa collaborates with community coalitions, policymakers, healthcare professionals, educators, and industry stakeholders to develop strategies that promote healthier communities and reduce risk factors.
Understanding Gambling-Related Harm
During her presentation, Lisa emphasized that gambling-related harm exists on a continuum and can affect individuals, families, and communities in different ways.
While most adults who gamble do so responsibly and without experiencing negative consequences, some individuals may develop behaviors that result in financial, emotional, relationship, or mental health challenges. Early awareness, prevention, and access to support services are critical components of reducing harm and improving outcomes.
Additional information, educational materials, and support resources are available through the Hoosier Lottery's Positive Play program on our Helpful Resources page.
The discussion also highlighted the connection between gambling and mental health. Individuals experiencing gambling-related harm may also face challenges related to stress, anxiety, depression, or substance use. Because of these complexities, collaboration between the gaming industry, treatment providers, advocacy organizations, and community partners is key to promoting awareness and connecting individuals with support services.
A Shared Commitment to Responsible Gaming
One of the main themes of the presentation was that responsible gaming is a shared responsibility.
Treatment providers, prevention specialists, gaming operators, regulators, educators, and community organizations each play a role in helping individuals make informed decisions about gambling and access support when needed.
Organizations such as MHAI contribute to these efforts by:
These efforts align closely with the Hoosier Lottery's commitment to Positive Play and responsible gaming education.
Working Together to Reduce Harm
The Hoosier Lottery values opportunities to learn from prevention and treatment professionals such as Lisa and the team at MHAI. Conversations like these help strengthen partnerships across Indiana and advance a shared goal, ensuring that gambling remains a form of entertainment while increasing awareness of available resources and support services.
By bringing together experts from prevention, treatment, public health, and the gaming industry, the ICPG Responsible Gaming Committee continues to foster collaboration and encourage meaningful discussions about reducing gambling-related harms throughout Indiana.
