Meet the '80s' Favorite Frog
In the classic Frogger arcade game, players used a joystick to hop past obstacles as they guided their frogs from the bottom of the screen to the empty homes at the top of the screen. But did you know Frogger almost never made it to the U.S.? Developed in 1981 by Japanese video game company Konami, Frogger was originally seen by American game companies as not action-packed enough compared to other hit titles. That is, until one video game market researcher, Elizabeth Falconer, saw the game’s true potential.
Falconer convinced Sega to take a chance on licensing the once-rejected game, and after a test run in a singular San Diego location, it proved to be such a smashing success that distributors immediately agreed to resell it. Upon its official release, Frogger was an instant hit.
Bringing the Retro Arcade to You: How to Play Frogger
The Frogger arcade game is known for its slower, strategic gameplay. Players must guide their frogs home by directing them across a busy highway and over a river filled with snakes, alligators and otters. Sounds simple enough, right? Not exactly ... the game has an infinite number of timed levels that increase in difficulty as you play. And at the time of its release, Frogger was known for having more ways to lose than any other game on the market.
Since its release, many versions of the game have been produced, and fans still play to this day. In fact, in 2021, a new Frogger world-record was set. Michael Smith beat the previous high score record with 1,356,520 points—a feat that took him more than 7 hours.
