An Elkhart couple is planning a family vacation to Hawaii after winning a $500,000 Top Prize.

They typically buy a couple Hoosier Lottery Scratch-offs while grocery shopping at Martin’s. On one shopping trip, they redeemed a $100 winning Scratch-off and purchased two $50 Colossal Cash Scratch-offs.

The husband sat in his car and began scratching the first of the two tickets while his wife left to run a few more errands. He scratched the winning numbers and then scratched the first of his numbers. He was excited to see the first number matched a winning number. His excitement quickly turned to disbelief, though, when he scratched the prize amount to reveal a $500,000 Top Prize.

“I just sat there staring at it for a few minutes,” he recalled. 

Once the initial shock had worn off, he scratched the QR code and scanned the ticket on the Hoosier Lottery’s app. The screen displayed a message stating he would need to contact the Hoosier Lottery to claim his prize. Still not believing it could be real, he sent his wife a photo of the ticket and then called her. 

“That’s $500,000, right??” he asked.

“I was just as shocked as he was,” his wife said. “I scanned it several times just to make sure.”

The couple plans to use some of their winnings to take a family trip to Hawaii and will invest the rest of the money.
