Winner Stories
Raschel Downey lives in the small, southern Indiana community of Newburgh with her husband and two children. Raschel works as a recruiter for Miller Pipeline and finds time to bake and run (to offset all the baking). She also squeezes in time to pick up a Powerball® ticket about once a week. “You can’t win if you don’t play,” Raschel says.
With the Powerball jackpot at a near record high amount, Raschel bought a ticket but opted not to purchase Power Play like she usually does. She couldn’t remember how much it would cost and had forgotten to get cash, so she planned to spend just the couple of dollars she had in her wallet at the time.
The next morning, Raschel looked up the winning numbers while on the way to a pumpkin patch with her family. Seeing that she won $50,000, Raschel excitedly told her husband, and of course the children in the backseat joined the frenzied excitement. “My eight-year-old daughter thinks we’re rich,” Raschel laughed about her reaction. “She has a whole list of toys she wants.”
When Raschel called her mom, who she plays Powerball with, and told her about the win, her mom couldn’t believe that Raschel didn’t add Power Play like they had agreed was the best way to play. “We went through this!” Raschel’s mom said. In the end, her mom was very excited for her win and the mother-daughter pair continue to dream about hitting the jackpot one day.
Raschel, who is one of five children, plans to share her prize money with her family and may consider a trip to Disney World or save the rest.
