Melvin Sours lives in the small town of Bronson, Michigan, about 60 miles north of Fort Wayne. He commutes to Indiana each day for his job at a company that makes plastic fuel tanks and usually stops at the same Kroger in Kendallville when he needs gas or groceries.

One day when Melvin stopped the clerk told him the new $20 Lady Luck Scratch-off had just launched, so Melvin bought one. He scratched the ticket while sitting in his car in the parking lot and was thrilled because he thought he won $500. As he studied the ticket, though, Melvin was stunned to see some more zeroes and realized he actually won the game’s top prize of $500,000!

As soon as he got home that day, he showed the ticket to his wife. “Is this real?!” she asked in disbelief.

Melvin plans to put his winnings in the bank.
