On their Fridays off, you can normally find Roylene “Roy” and her friend shopping for antiques. However, on a Friday in early April, the pair left Crown Point around 5:30 a.m. to travel to the Hoosier Lottery office in Indianapolis to claim Roy’s $50,000 Powerball® prize.

Roy purchased her ticket at the gas station across from the Walgreens where she has worked for many years. Once a week she stops in for gas and a Quick Pick Powerball® ticket. When Roy checked her numbers and realized that she’d won, she immediately called her friend. “Are you at work? I have something to tell you!” After she had shared that she had won, Roy’s friend replied, “Calm down, you don’t want to go telling everyone!”

Keeping the good news to herself was a challenge for Roy. Friends and even the gas station clerk guessed that she might have won. She only cracked when a close friend asked if she had won, and Roy confessed that she had won.

Roy plans to use the prize money to pay off bills and contribute to her savings.
