Playing the lottery is fun. And the best way to keep it fun is by playing responsibly. Whether it’s setting limits or understanding the odds, these helpful tips can help all Hoosiers keep play positive.

Set Your Limits

When you’re playing the lottery, be sure to keep track of how much you are spending in terms of time and money.
That might mean tracking the money you spend playing lottery games. Our Play Calculator can help you determine how your spending can fit into the rest of your budget. It can also be helpful to talk about spending limits with your family to ensure everyone in the household is on the same page.
Setting your limits also means making sure the time you spend playing the lottery doesn’t take away from other responsibilities and hobbies. Find out more helpful tips for setting limits.

Understand the Odds

Another way to make sure you’re keeping your play positive is by knowing your odds. The odds are the likelihood of winning a prize in whatever lottery game you’re playing.
For Scratch-offs, odds are the chance of a single ticket being a winner. For example, if the odds on a Scratch-off are 1 in 4, then you have a 1 in 4 chance of winning a prize on each ticket. So even if you buy three tickets, the odds you’ll win a prize on any one of those tickets remains 1 in 4.
For draw games, the odds are calculated by dividing the total possible combinations of numbers by the number of possible winning combinations. Learn more about understanding odds.

Have Fun

Every lottery game is totally random and unpredictable. You can’t use skill or strategy to win, and buying more tickets doesn’t increase your odds. So, while it's fun to have special routines or lucky charms – like using your family's birthdays to choose your draw game numbers – remember that fun is all it is.
