Indianapolis woman wins $77,777 on Scratch-off
Indianapolis resident Tonda Rhodes has a reason to smile this holiday season: she won $77,777 on a Hoosier Lottery Scratch-off.
The win comes three months after the tragic death of her husband.
Tonda claimed her prize at Hoosier Lottery headquarters with her daughter and daughter-in-law. She won a top prize on a $5 Gold 7s Scratch-off purchased at Speedway, 3437 Lafayette Road in Indianapolis.
After battling cancer, Tonda’s husband, Walter, died Sept. 11 with their home filled with family members.
Those family members are the focus of Tonda’s plans for her $77,777 prize. She wants to help her children. She said the money “gives us more choices.”
Playing Hoosier Lottery Scratch-offs is an occasional family bonding activity for Tonda. She was at Speedway with her adult son when they decided to buy a couple tickets. Tonda played the Scratch-off before they left the retailer, and realized right away she was a winner.
Tonda is the fourth top prize winner for the $5 Gold 7s Scratch-off, which hit retailers in early August. Two top prizes remained for the game as of Dec. 19. Previous winners were Loren Clay of Valparaiso, Raymond McKee of Muncie and Angelique Hibbler of Indianapolis.
Estimated Overall Odds for Gold 7s are 1 in 3.81.
