Lucky day: Union painter wins Hoosier Lotto jackpot on 12-12-12
There was a lot of buzz about the date 12-12-12. For Michael Riha of Indianapolis 12-12-12 is a date he will never forget. It’s the date he won more than $1 million playing Hoosier Lotto. Michael purchased a ticket at Circle K at 6743 E. Washington St. in Indianapolis that matched all six numbers in the 12-12-12 drawing. Those winning numbers are: 7-8-9-24-32-34.
As they appeared on his ticket - all together on one line - those six numbers are worth more than $1.1 million dollars. While that doesn’t quite add up to retirement for the 53-year-old, it does offer the father of two and grandfather of three “a little security” and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help his family out.
Michael grew up in Indianapolis and is a 1977 graduate of Warren Central High School. He has been a union commercial painter for 35 years and he has been playing Hoosier Lotto since the game started in 1994. He has been playing his own numbers consistently all these years, but on 12-12-12 it was a quick pick ticket, with numbers randomly picked by the terminal, that ended up hitting for him.
“Everybody always said, ‘You’re wasting your money. You’re wasting your money on the Lottery,’ but I always told them, ‘It’s nice to dream!’” Read more of Michael's story, including what he plans to do with his winnings, here.
