Farmland man wins record-setting Cash 5 jackpot!
A Farmland man wasted no time coming forward to claim the record-breaking $1,239,000 Cash 5 jackpot. Devin Hodson won in the Saturday, Jan. 21 drawing, and was at Hoosier Lottery headquarters the following Monday to claim the prize.
Devin bought the winning ticket at Village Pantry, 3300 S. Madison St. in Muncie. The Village Pantry is also where he discovered he had the winner. He went in to have the clerk scan his ticket, and she said she had a message telling her the prize was too big for her to cash. Devin believed that meant he matched all five numbers. He immediately called his fiancée, Mary.
“Stop this isn’t funny,” Mary told him, not believing his story.
So, Devin put the Village Pantry clerk on the phone to talk to Mary.
“She said, ‘Ma’am, this is real,’” Mary said.
Devin plays Cash 5 a couple times per week. Because the Cash 5 jackpot was at a record level, Devin bought a $10 Quick Pick ticket Friday. He didn’t have any winners, so he tossed the ticket in the trash. Moments later, he dug the ticket out, deciding to re-play those same numbers in Saturday’s drawing. It worked.
“It was very shocking,” Devin said.
Devin met with a financial planner before claiming the prize. He primarily plans to pay off bills and invest the money. He also wants to buy a vehicle and fix up his house.
The Jan 21 Cash 5 jackpot was the highest on record for Hoosier Lottery. It beat out the last record of $880,000, which was won Nov. 8, 2014. The winning numbers for the Jan. 21 drawing are 9-14-21-31-36.
Overall Odds for Cash 5 are 1 in 9.6.
