Woman wins $50,000 on Powerball ticket stuffed in Christmas stocking

INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 15, 2019) — Lindy Short ran laps around her office, screaming after scanning her Powerball ticket with the Hoosier Lottery app. She won $50,000.

“That’s more zeroes than $50!” she recalled saying at the time.

Lindy, from Sellersburg, claimed her $50,000 Powerball prize Jan. 7 at Hoosier Lottery headquarters in Indianapolis. She won on a ticket she received for Christmas.

As Christmas approached, Lindy put a small gift in her husband, Danny’s, Christmas stocking. Although the couple normally doesn’t put anything in each other’s stockings, she found the item and thought of him. He said he felt like he had to return the gesture. As a result, he put a Powerball ticket they had recently purchased at Meijer in her stocking. That ticket was a $50,000 winner.

Lindy checked the ticket while she was at work. She works as an office manager for her parents’ business. As a result of her screaming, her parents were the first ones to discover she’d won. Lindy quickly called her husband to share the news and sent him a screenshot from the Hoosier Lottery mobile app telling her the ticket was a $50,000 winner.

Besides giving 10 percent to her church, Lindy said she hadn’t decided what to do with the prize money yet.

In order to win $50,000, Lindy’s Powerball ticket matched 4 of 5 numbers and the Powerball. Meijer in New Albany sold the winning ticket.
