3 winners claim $50,000 Powerball prizes
INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 4, 2017) — Three people started off 2017 with reasons to celebrate, after claiming $50,000 Powerball prizes at the end of 2016.
Kim Reel of Muncie, Tim Carver of Gentryville and Gary Cook of Shepherdsville, Kentucky all claimed $50,000 prizes at Hoosier Lottery headquarters in Indianapolis the last few days of the year.
Kim won on the Dec. 17 drawing, while Tim and Gary both won on the Dec. 24 Powerball drawing.
Gary, who is originally from Muncie, bought Powerball tickets while visiting family for Christmas. Although he only plays the lottery once or twice per year, he said the word “ticket” popped into his head while waiting to pay at Village Pantry. So, he bought $20 worth of Powerball on a whim. Days later, his wife found the ticket and checked the numbers, discovering his $50,000 win. She called Gary’s phone 20 times before he answered.
Although Gary said there are plenty of things he wants, there’s nothing he truly needs. As a result, he plans to use the money to help others.
For Kim, the $50,000 was a surprise until she arrived in Indianapolis. An employee at Hoosier Lottery headquarters was the first to inform her she won $50,000. Although Kim knew she had a winner, she wanted to wait to find out how much she won.
“That’s the thrill,” Kim said. “It’s like having a baby. I didn’t want to know until I was here.”
Tim plans on putting his $50,000 in a savings account. The self-employed construction and drywall worker also didn’t find out for days that he won $50,000. His wife said the win is “one more step to retirement.”
All three winners matched 4 of 5 numbers and the Powerball. Kim’s ticket was purchased at Rich Oil, 2720 S. Madison St. in Muncie. Tim’s ticket was purchased at Circle S Food Mart, 2 N. Washington St. in Dale. Gary’s ticket was purchased at Village Pantry, 6500 S. State Road 67 in Muncie.
Overall Odds for Powerball are 1 in 25.
