Grant Administrative Partner:

Central Indiana Community Foundation

The Hoosier Lottery Student Research Grant program's objective is to build capacity and knowledge in the area of responsible gaming research and program development.

The Hoosier Lottery shall fund up to $10,000 per applicant, per calendar year, to support research projects by a current graduate student at an accredited university in Indiana completing a master’s thesis or dissertation that aligns with the Hoosier Lottery’s research priorities.  The funds are awarded by the Hoosier Lottery Research Grant Program Committee and are available on a competitive basis. Eligible individuals and nonprofit organizations may submit proposals throughout the year.

  • An applicant must be a graduate student at an accredited university in Indiana completing a master’s thesis or dissertation that aligns with the Hoosier Lottery’s research priorities.
  • Each individual applicant must be affiliated with a qualified 501(c)(3) institution of higher learning (typically the university or educational organization where the applicant is enrolled) that is authorized to accept funds on the applicant’s behalf. This affiliated institution is the “Sponsoring Organization,” and will be responsible for receiving the funds and distributing them to the applicant.
  • Applicants must be supervised by a faculty member of the institution. The applicant must follow the research protocols and regulations instituted by the university. The faculty member is responsible for ensuring proper procedure is followed.
Hoosier Lottery Research Priorities:
  • Examining strategies to promote the responsible gaming principals of Positive Play harm minimization and treatment referral for lottery players
  • Identifying the positive or negative factors that influence behaviors and beliefs among lottery players who may be at risk for problem gambling
  • Determining innovative methods to reach and connect lottery players with educational resources or treatment providers
  • Understanding the role technology plays in the promotion of Positive Play attributes or treatment of problem gambling among lottery players
  • Examine the implementation of responsible gaming principles, especially those with the least amount of research specific to lotteries, specifically employee training, stakeholder engagement, and program evaluation
What is covered:
  • Standalone research projects or a pilot project
  • Preliminary research for a larger research project (literature reviews, instrument testing, etc.)
  • Research tasks subsequent to a full research project (follow-up testing, for example)
Applicants must provide:
  • Completed application form
  • Letter of support from faculty advisor/mentor and institution, including authorization from the university to accept grant funds on the applicant’s behalf.
  • Proposal which must clearly demonstrate how the project aligns with the Hoosier Lottery’s research priorities.
  • Budget
  • Additional relevant information supporting the application (optional)
Award Decision Criteria:

Please complete the application with any relevant information that will help the committee evaluate the following:

  • Easily identifiable research objective and methodology that provides a broad understanding of the subject
  • Clear connection between the proposed research and the Hoosier Lottery’s problem gambling research priorities
  • Will provide new or unique insight
  • Will be useful to a variety of stakeholders, not just the Hoosier Lottery
  • Displays a clear understanding of gambling and problem gambling principles
How It Works:

Upon receipt of the award acceptance letter, 90% of the funds will be provided to the Sponsoring Organization for dispersal to the student recipient. The recipient is required to submit progress reports throughout the duration of the project. Ten percent (10%) of the funds are held until the completion of the research project and a final project report is received. We will use this report for improvement of the Hoosier Lottery Responsible Gaming Program.
